About the training
Course Overview
Our Electrical First Aid Course provides practical first aid training for people who work with or around electricity and may need to respond following an electrical incident.
Electrical incidents create an additional challenge for a first aider: before helping the casualty, they need to consider whether the electrical hazard is still present. The course therefore starts with scene safety and safe isolation before moving into casualty assessment, CPR, AED use, electrical burns and other injuries that can result from electrical contact.
Learners also consider the wider consequences of an electrical incident. A casualty may have suffered burns or cardiac arrest, but they may also have fallen, sustained a fracture or suffered other trauma.
We don't just teach people a first aid sequence. Learners work through practical exercises and realistic electrical-incident scenarios so they understand what to do, why they are doing it and, importantly, when it isn't safe to approach the casualty.
The course can be tailored to the electrical risks, working environments and emergency arrangements within your organisation, helping make the training practical, interactive and relevant to the people attending.

Maximum ratio of 12 learners per tutor, in line with all first aid courses.
Prerequisites
There are no formal prerequisites for attending the Electrical First Aid Course.
Learners do not need to be qualified electricians, although the course is particularly relevant to people who work with or around electrical systems and equipment.
This is a practical first aid course and requires floor work. Learners are expected to take part in practical activities, including casualty assessment and performing CPR on a casualty or manikin positioned on the floor.
If a learner has a disability, medical condition or additional support requirement that may affect their participation, please tell us before the course so we can discuss suitable support or reasonable adjustments.
Course duration
The Electrical First Aid Course is normally delivered face-to-face over 1 day.
The course combines first aid knowledge with substantial practical activity and electrical-incident scenarios, including scene assessment, safe isolation, casualty assessment, CPR, AED use, electrical burns and associated trauma.
For in-house courses, the tutor can relate examples and scenarios to your organisation's working environment, electrical risks and emergency arrangements.
If you have particular electrical risks or incidents that you would like included within the training, please discuss these with us before the course so we can make the session as relevant as possible.
Assessment
Assessment takes place throughout the course through tutor questioning and observed practical activities.
Learners are expected to demonstrate the key first aid skills covered during the course, including scene assessment, primary survey, CPR, safe AED use and appropriate first aid priorities following an electrical incident.
Practical scenarios are used to check that learners can put the individual skills together and make sensible decisions, including recognising when an electrical hazard means it is not yet safe to approach a casualty.
The tutor demonstrates techniques, gives learners opportunities to practise and provides constructive feedback throughout the course.
Certification

Requalification
Electrical First Aid training should normally be renewed at least every 3 years.
Annual refresher training is strongly recommended to help keep practical first aid skills fresh, current and easier to recall in an emergency.
Employers should also arrange additional refresher training when electrical equipment, working practices, emergency procedures, first aid guidance or workplace risks change, or where practice shows that further training would be useful.
