About the training

Course Overview

A good risk assessment is much more than filling in a form. The person carrying it out needs to understand the work, recognise what could cause harm, consider who could be affected, evaluate the existing controls and make sensible recommendations where more needs to be done. The Highfield Level 3 Award in Risk Assessment (RQF) is a regulated qualification for people with responsibility for carrying out workplace risk assessments, particularly in lower-risk premises. The course develops learners' understanding of health and safety responsibilities, risk assessment legislation, the competence required of a risk assessor, workplace hazards and the factors that can influence risk. Learners also look at selecting suitable controls, recording and reviewing assessments and communicating their findings. Importantly, this isn't just about learning the theory. Learners are required to undertake a risk assessment as part of the qualification, applying what they have learnt to identify hazards, consider who could be harmed, evaluate the level of risk and make suitable recommendations. On our tutor-led courses, we use discussion, activities and workplace examples to explore how risk assessment works in practice. We look at why different people may reach different conclusions, what makes a control suitable and sufficient, and why a risk assessment needs to reflect the work that is actually being carried out. For organisation-specific courses, we can relate discussions and examples to your workplace so learners are applying the principles to situations that are relevant to the work they do.

Qualification code

600/5747/6

Maximum learners

Maximum learner-to-tutor ratio: 12:1.

We limit this course to 12 learners per tutor so there is time for discussion, workplace examples and appropriate support while learners develop and demonstrate their risk assessment skills.

Prerequisites

Learners must be 16 years of age or over to register for this qualification.

The qualification is intended for people who have responsibility for carrying out workplace risk assessments. Learners should therefore be prepared to apply what they learn by undertaking and recording a risk assessment as part of the qualification.

Live training via Microsoft Teams: learners will need access to a computer or laptop with a reliable internet connection and must be able to attend the course from a suitable location where they can participate by themselves without assistance from other people. Learners will also need access to a smartphone for the examination.

Learners will need access to a suitable workplace or other agreed environment in which they can undertake the risk assessment activity required for the qualification.

Learners will need to provide suitable identification before completing the assessment in accordance with Highfield's requirements.

If you need additional learning or assessment support, please tell us before the course so we have time to discuss appropriate support and, where applicable, reasonable adjustments.

Course duration

The qualification has 14 Guided Learning Hours (GLH) and a Total Qualification Time (TQT) of 20 hours.

Good Skills Training normally delivers this qualification over 2 days, either face-to-face or through live remote training via Microsoft Teams.

Throughout the course we combine tutor-led learning with discussion, exercises and workplace examples. Learners don't simply learn a five-step process – we explore how information is gathered, how risk is evaluated, how suitable controls are selected and how findings should be recorded and communicated.

Learners also undertake a risk assessment as part of the qualification assessment, allowing them to apply the principles covered during the course.

For organisation-specific courses, we can use appropriate examples from your workplace to make discussions and activities relevant to the people attending.

Assessment

The qualification has two assessment parts and learners must successfully complete both to achieve the qualification.

Part 1 – Multiple-choice examination: learners complete a 30-question examination and have 60 minutes to complete it. Learners need to achieve at least 20 out of 30 to pass.

Part 2 – Risk assessment activity: learners are required to undertake a risk assessment using the five-step risk assessment process. This allows learners to demonstrate that they can apply their knowledge in practice, including gathering information, evaluating risk, identifying who may be exposed, making suitable recommendations and recording and communicating their findings.

The risk assessment activity is internally assessed by Good Skills Training and subject to external moderation by Highfield Qualifications.

Assessment arrangements will be explained as part of your joining information and will depend on whether you are attending face-to-face or through Microsoft Teams.

Certification

Learners who successfully complete both parts of the assessment receive the Highfield Level 3 Award in Risk Assessment (RQF).

This is a regulated Level 3 qualification awarded by Highfield Qualifications.

Qualification number: 600/5747/6.
