About the training

Course Overview

Our Moving and Handling People Course provides practical training for employees who support people with their movement and mobility as part of their work. Moving and handling a person is very different from moving an object. The course considers the safety of both the person being supported and the employee, while recognising the importance of dignity, communication, independence and individual needs. Learners explore how moving and handling risks should be identified, assessed and reduced, when handling should be avoided, and how appropriate techniques and equipment can help people move or be supported more safely. Wherever possible, we adapt the course to your workplace and the people your team actually supports. Before an in-house course, we encourage you to tell us about the moving and handling activities your staff undertake and the equipment they use. Relevant risk assessments, moving and handling plans, photographs or other appropriate information can also help us tailor the training. This means the practical exercises and discussions can focus on situations your employees are likely to encounter, rather than relying entirely on generic examples. The emphasis throughout is practical, interactive and relevant. Learners have the opportunity to practise appropriate techniques, use relevant equipment and discuss how the principles apply within their own working environment.

Prerequisites

There are no formal qualification prerequisites for attending the Moving and Handling People Course.

This is a practical course and learners are expected to take an active part in moving and handling exercises and demonstrate the techniques covered during the training.

For in-house training, we must have access to the moving and handling equipment used within your organisation so that practical training can reflect the equipment and techniques your staff actually use.

This may include, but is not limited to, hoists, transfer boards, handling belts, slide sheets, standing aids and other relevant lifting or transfer equipment.

Where appropriate, we also recommend providing relevant moving and handling risk assessments, care or support plans, and information about the activities staff are expected to undertake. This helps us make the training as practical and relevant to your workplace as possible.

Learners should tell us before the course about any disability, injury, medical condition or additional support requirement that could affect their participation so that appropriate support and reasonable adjustments can be considered.
