Course Overview

The QNUK Level 3 Award in Emergency Outdoor First Aid (RQF) is a practical regulated qualification for people who may need to deal with an emergency in an outdoor environment where professional help is not immediately available. Learners develop the essential skills needed to assess an outdoor incident, protect a casualty from the environment, provide CPR and AED treatment, manage choking and control serious bleeding while arranging appropriate emergency assistance. The course also considers the things that make outdoor incidents different. Weather, terrain, access, cold, water and the time it takes help to arrive can all affect how the casualty is managed. This qualification is designed for outdoor settings where further help may be up to around 30 minutes away. If your activities take place in more remote environments or require a broader range of injury and illness management, the full QNUK Level 3 Award in Outdoor First Aid is likely to be the better option. Our approach is practical and scenario-based. Learners practise the techniques and apply them to realistic outdoor situations because first aid that works only in the training room isn't much use on the side of a hill. Practical, interactive and relevant training shouldn't be an alien concept.

Reducing the risk of infection and obtaining consent.
Managing an incident in an outdoor environment.
Scene survey and primary survey.
Protecting a casualty from wind, rain, heat, cold and other environmental factors.
Summoning appropriate emergency or rescue assistance.
Preventing and managing hypothermia.
Monitoring casualty vital signs.
Adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Using an automated external defibrillator (AED).
CPR modifications for children, drowning, avalanche, lightning and remote situations.
The recovery position and monitoring breathing.
Seizures.
Choking.
Minor wounds, burns and scalds.
Recognising life-threatening bleeding.
Managing external and catastrophic bleeding.
Using trauma dressings.
Using haemostatic agents.
Using manufactured tourniquets.
Recognising and treating shock.
Water immersion, cold-water shock and drowning-related emergencies.

Maximum learners

Maximum ratio of 12 learners per tutor, in line with all first aid courses.

Prerequisites

No previous first aid qualification is required. Learners should be at least 14 years old. Learners aged between 14 and 16 may complete the qualification but should not be relied upon as the sole emergency first aider. This is a practical first aid qualification and requires floor work. Learners must be physically capable of demonstrating the required first aid procedures, including performing CPR on a casualty or manikin positioned on the floor. The course also includes practical outdoor activities, so learners should be capable of taking part safely in realistic outdoor scenarios. Learners must have sufficient English to understand the learning and assessment. QNUK strongly recommends approximately Level 1 literacy. Suitable proof of identity is required before assessment. If you have a disability, medical condition or additional support requirement that may affect the training or assessment, please tell us before the course so appropriate reasonable adjustments can be considered.

Course duration

The QNUK Level 3 Award in Emergency Outdoor First Aid (RQF) has 8 Guided Learning Hours. Good Skills Training delivers this qualification face-to-face over 1 day. The course is highly practical and includes outdoor-focused learning, scenarios and assessment. Appropriate breaks are additional to the required Guided Learning Hours. The day includes casualty assessment, environmental management, CPR, AED use, choking, catastrophic bleeding, hypothermia, water immersion and the practical assessments required by QNUK. Learners should complete the qualification within 4 weeks.

Assessment

The qualification is assessed through an invigilated multiple-choice examination and observed practical assessments.

Multiple-choice examination: 15 questions.
Assessment time: 30 minutes.
Pass mark: 11 correct answers out of 15 (70%).
Practical assessment: learners demonstrate the required first aid skills in realistic or simulated situations.
Practical pass mark: 100% of the required assessment criteria.
Overall grading: Pass or Fail.

The tutor demonstrates the techniques, gives learners opportunities to practise and provides feedback before formal assessment. The aim is to produce first aiders who can adapt their skills when an emergency happens outdoors – not simply people who can answer the right questions on a test.

Certification

Learners who successfully complete all required assessments receive the QNUK Level 3 Award in Emergency Outdoor First Aid (RQF). Qualification number: 603/2454/5 This is a regulated Level 3 qualification awarded by Qualifications Network (QNUK). The qualification is valid for 3 years. Certification is subject to successfully meeting all assessment requirements and the applicable QNUK quality assurance processes.

Requalification

The QNUK Level 3 Award in Emergency Outdoor First Aid (RQF) is valid for 3 years. Learners who need to maintain the qualification for their role should complete appropriate requalification training before their existing certificate expires. Outdoor first aid skills can fade when they aren't used regularly, so opportunities to refresh CPR, catastrophic bleeding, environmental casualty care and outdoor scenarios between formal courses can help maintain confidence and competence. Employers and activity providers should also review training when activities, equipment, operating procedures, risks or relevant guidance change.
