Course Overview
The QNUK Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid (RQF) is a regulated qualification for people who may need to provide emergency first aid to babies and children in early years and childcare settings.
The course focuses on the immediate actions that matter when an infant or child becomes seriously ill or injured. Learners practise casualty assessment, infant and child CPR, AED use, the recovery position, choking, bleeding, shock and seizures.
This is practical first aid training. Learners don't just hear what they should do; they practise the skills, work through realistic situations and receive feedback so they understand what to do, why they are doing it and how the response differs for infants and children.
The qualification meets the requirements for Emergency Paediatric First Aid set out within the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. It is the shorter emergency-level paediatric qualification, so organisations should make sure it is the appropriate course for the learner's role rather than assuming it replaces the full Paediatric First Aid qualification.

Course Information

Maximum learners
Maximum ratio of 12 learners per tutor, in line with all first aid courses.
Prerequisites
No previous first aid qualification is required.
Learners should be at least 14 years old. QNUK states that learners aged between 14 and 16 should not be relied upon as the sole emergency first aider.
This is a practical first aid qualification and requires floor work. Learners must demonstrate first aid procedures during assessment, including performing CPR on infant and child manikins positioned on the floor. Learners must therefore be physically capable of completing the required practical activities.
Learners must have sufficient English to understand the training and complete the assessment. QNUK strongly recommends that learners are working at approximately Level 1 literacy.
As this is a regulated qualification, learners must provide suitable proof of identity before assessment.
If a learner has a disability, medical condition or additional support requirement that may affect their training or assessment, please tell us before the course so appropriate reasonable adjustments can be considered in advance.
Course duration
The QNUK Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid (RQF) has 6 Guided Learning Hours.
Good Skills Training delivers this qualification face-to-face over 1 day.
The training includes the practical learning, coaching and assessment required for emergency paediatric first aid, including infant and child casualty assessment, CPR, AED use, recovery position, choking and bleeding.
QNUK states that learners should complete the qualification within 4 weeks.
Assessment
The qualification is assessed through an invigilated multiple-choice examination and observed practical assessments.
- Multiple-choice examination: 15 questions.
- Assessment time: 30 minutes.
- Pass mark: 11 correct answers out of 15 (70%).
- Practical assessment: learners must demonstrate the required paediatric first aid skills in realistic or simulated situations.
- Practical pass mark: 100% of the required assessment criteria.
- Overall grading: Pass or Fail.
Certification
Learners who successfully complete all required assessments receive the QNUK Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid (RQF).

This is a regulated Level 3 qualification awarded by Qualifications Network (QNUK).
The qualification is valid for 3 years.
The qualification meets the Emergency Paediatric First Aid training requirements outlined within the Early Years Foundation Stage framework.
Certification is subject to successfully meeting all assessment requirements and the applicable QNUK quality assurance processes.
Requalification
The QNUK Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid (RQF) is valid for 3 years.
Learners who need to maintain the qualification should complete the appropriate paediatric first aid training again before their current certificate expires.
Three years is a long time to retain practical emergency skills that may not be used regularly. Employers should provide suitable opportunities for first aiders to practise and refresh their skills between formal courses.
Additional refresher training should also be considered when relevant first aid guidance, workplace procedures or childcare arrangements change, or where practice shows that further training would be useful.
