About the training
Course Overview
Our AED Train the Trainer Course is a practical one-day programme for existing first aid instructors and suitable in-house trainers who want to develop their knowledge of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and learn how to deliver effective CPR and AED training.
For experienced first aid instructors, the course provides an opportunity to develop greater knowledge of AEDs and explore different ways of teaching and assessing CPR and defibrillator use. AED training is already covered within our First Aid Instructor Course, so existing Good Skills Training first aid instructors would not normally need to complete this course unless they want additional development in this area.
The course can also be used to develop competent in-house trainers who need to deliver CPR and AED awareness or practical training to colleagues within their own organisation.
We don't just look at which buttons to press. Learners explore how AEDs work, how they fit into the response to cardiac arrest, practical use and maintenance, common questions and misconceptions, and how to demonstrate and teach CPR and AED use effectively.
The course is practical and interactive, with learners taking an active role in demonstrations, assessment and micro-teach sessions.
This course does not qualify somebody as a first aid instructor and does not qualify them to deliver regulated first aid or regulated AED qualifications. Anyone wishing to become a first aid instructor should complete an appropriate First Aid Instructor programme.

Every learner needs sufficient opportunity to demonstrate CPR and AED skills, practise assessing others and deliver a micro-teach session.
Prerequisites
This course is designed for existing first aid instructors and suitable in-house trainers. The prerequisite depends on how the learner intends to use the training.
Existing first aid instructors should already hold appropriate current first aid and training or assessing qualifications and have good practical competence in CPR and AED use.
In-house trainers do not need to be qualified first aid instructors where they will only be delivering CPR and AED awareness or practical training within their own organisation. However, they must have good current knowledge and practical competence in CPR and AED use and sufficient training experience or ability to deliver practical instruction safely and effectively.
This course does not qualify an in-house trainer to deliver first aid qualifications or regulated AED qualifications. Anyone who wants to teach and assess formal first aid courses should complete an appropriate First Aid Instructor Course and meet the requirements of the relevant awarding organisation or certification scheme.
This is a practical course. Learners must be able to demonstrate CPR at floor level and practical AED use unless a reasonable adjustment can be made without compromising the required course outcomes.
Learners should tell us before the course about any disability, medical condition or additional support requirement so that appropriate support and reasonable adjustments can be considered.
Course duration
The AED Train the Trainer Course includes 6 contact hours and is delivered face-to-face over one day.
Good Skills Training normally delivers the course from 09:30 – 16:30.
The programme combines AED and CPR knowledge with practical demonstrations, trainer-development activities and micro-teaching.
A significant part of the course is practical. Learners should be prepared to demonstrate skills, practise training others and take an active role in the micro-teach sessions.
Assessment
Assessment takes place throughout the course and considers both CPR and AED competence and the learner's ability to deliver effective training.
Learners are observed demonstrating CPR and AED use and must show that they can perform and explain the practical skills accurately and safely.
Learners also plan and deliver a micro-teach session, giving them the opportunity to demonstrate how they explain a subject, demonstrate practical skills, involve learners and provide appropriate feedback.
Knowledge is assessed through a 20-question assessment paper. Learners must achieve at least 15 out of 20 (75%) to pass the knowledge assessment.
Learners must successfully complete the knowledge assessment, practical assessment and micro-teach requirements before the Good Skills Training AED Train the Trainer certificate can be issued.
Certification
Learners who successfully complete the course and assessment receive a Good Skills Training AED Train the Trainer certificate.
The certificate recognises that the learner has completed training in delivering CPR and AED awareness and practical instruction within the scope of this course.
This is not a first aid instructor qualification and does not authorise the holder to deliver regulated first aid or regulated AED qualifications. Trainers delivering regulated qualifications must separately meet the requirements of the relevant awarding organisation.
Good Skills Training is ISO 9001 certified for the delivery of training and consultancy services, including course certification.
Requalification
The Good Skills Training AED Train the Trainer certificate should be renewed every 3 years.
Trainers should not rely on three-yearly requalification alone. Anyone delivering CPR and AED training should maintain current knowledge and practical competence and keep up to date with changes to resuscitation guidance and AED practice.
Regular practical CPR and AED refresher training and continuing professional development are strongly recommended between formal trainer requalification courses.
Existing first aid instructors may maintain and refresh their AED instructional competence through the First Aid & AED Instructor Requalification Course.
