Course Overview

The Highfield Level 1 Award in the Principles of Fire Safety Awareness (RQF) is a regulated qualification that gives learners a clear introduction to workplace fire safety. The course helps learners understand how fires start, common workplace fire hazards, what can be done to reduce the risk of fire and what they should do if a fire is discovered or the alarm sounds. It is particularly suitable for new starters and employees who need a recognised fire-safety awareness qualification rather than the additional responsibilities covered by Fire Marshal training. At Good Skills Training, we keep the subject straightforward and relevant. We use workplace examples, questions and discussion so learners understand how the principles apply to the places where they actually work rather than simply learning enough to pass the assessment. Maximum learners

Maximum ratio of 20 learners per tutor, in line with all first aid courses.

Prerequisites

There are no previous fire-safety qualifications required to enrol on this course. The qualification is approved for learners aged 14 years and over. Highfield recommends that learners have a minimum of Level 1 English or equivalent so they can understand the learning and complete the assessment. Learners will need to provide suitable identification before completing the qualification assessment. If you have a disability, additional learning need or other support requirement that may affect your training or assessment, please tell us before the course so appropriate support and reasonable adjustments can be considered.

Course duration

The Highfield Level 1 Award in the Principles of Fire Safety Awareness (RQF) has 4 Guided Learning Hours. Good Skills Training normally delivers the qualification as a half-day face-to-face, with sufficient time allowed for learning and assessment. The qualification can also be completed through our Qualify at Home route. Learners complete the required learning remotely before undertaking the assessment under the approved invigilation arrangements.

Assessment

The qualification is assessed through an externally set multiple-choice examination.

Number of questions: 15.
Assessment time: 30 minutes.
Pass mark: 9 correct answers out of 15.
Grading: Pass or Fail.

The assessment is completed under the required Highfield examination and invigilation arrangements. During the course, the tutor will explain the subject clearly, use practical workplace examples and check understanding so learners are preparing to understand fire safety rather than simply memorise answers for the exam.

Certification

Learners who successfully complete the assessment receive the Highfield Level 1 Award in the Principles of Fire Safety Awareness (RQF). Qualification number: 603/1564/7 This is a regulated Level 1 qualification awarded by Highfield Qualifications and sits on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). Certification is subject to successfully meeting the assessment requirements and the relevant Highfield quality assurance processes.

Requalification

There is no fixed expiry period stated in the qualification specification. Best practice is for refresher training to take place at least every 3 years, in line with other health and safety related training. Employers should also arrange refresher training when there are significant changes to the workplace, fire risk assessment, fire procedures or evacuation arrangements, or where fire drills and workplace practice show that further training is needed.
