About the training
Course Overview
Our First Aid for Foster Carers Course gives foster carers practical first aid skills for the illnesses, injuries and emergencies that can arise when caring for babies, children and young people.
Learners practise the immediate actions that matter, including scene assessment, infant and child CPR, AED awareness, recovery position, choking, seizures, febrile convulsions, life-threatening bleeding and shock.
The course also covers common childhood emergencies including anaphylaxis, asthma, bites, stings, burns and minor injuries, together with clear guidance on when to call 999 and how to provide an effective handover to the emergency services.
We keep the training practical, supportive and relevant to foster care. Learners are encouraged to ask questions and work through realistic situations so they leave feeling better prepared to respond when a child in their care becomes ill or injured.
Quality training at affordable prices shouldn't be an alien concept – and neither should first aid training that feels relevant to the people taking part.

- Scene survey and primary survey for an infant or child.
- Infant and child CPR, AED awareness and recovery position.
- Choking, seizures and febrile convulsions.

Course Information
The practical details you may need before arranging or booking this course.
Maximum learners
Maximum ratio of 12 learners per tutor, in line with all first aid courses.
Prerequisites
There are no previous first aid qualifications required to attend the course.
The course is designed primarily for learners aged 16 years and over.
This is practical first aid training and requires floor work. Learners must be physically capable of taking part in first aid demonstrations and practice, including performing CPR on a casualty or manikin positioned on the floor.
Foster carers should also follow any additional first aid, health or medication procedures required by their fostering service or identified within the individual child's care plan.
If a learner has a disability, medical condition or additional support requirement that may affect their participation, please tell us before the course so suitable support or reasonable adjustments can be considered.
Course duration
The First Aid for Foster Carers Course provides approximately 4.5 contact hours of face-to-face training.
Good Skills Training normally delivers the course over 1 day, typically:
- Standard session: 09:30 – 14:30.
The timetable includes time for demonstrations, practical skills, questions and realistic scenarios relevant to caring for babies, children and young people.
Alternative timings may be possible for in-house courses. Where the available training time is reduced, this may affect the amount of content and practical activity that can be included, so please discuss any different timing requirements with us before booking.
Assessment
There is no formal assessment or written examination on the First Aid for Foster Carers Course.
The course is designed to be practical and participation-based. Learners take part in demonstrations, hands-on first aid practice and realistic scenarios involving babies and children.
The tutor uses questions, discussion and observation throughout the session to check understanding, correct technique and provide useful feedback.
The emphasis is on giving foster carers the confidence to recognise when something is wrong, provide appropriate first aid and know when further medical help is needed.
Certification
Learners who successfully complete the course and assessment receive an First Aid for Foster Carers certificate.

Requalification
Workplace first-aid certificates are normally valid for three years. HSE strongly recommends annual refresher training during that period.
