Course Overview

Managing health and safety at this level is about much more than recognising hazards. You need to understand how health and safety is managed across an organisation, how suitable controls are developed and how to turn legal and organisational requirements into safe working practices. The Highfield Level 4 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace (RQF) is an advanced regulated qualification for supervisors and managers with direct responsibility for health and safety management. The course develops a detailed understanding of health and safety law, management systems, policies, communication and consultation, risk assessment, safe systems of work, monitoring, auditing and incident investigation. Learners also consider a broad range of workplace hazards and the legislation and controls associated with them. This isn't five days of sitting and listening to presentations. We use discussion, workplace examples, exercises and activities to explore how health and safety decisions are made and, importantly, why particular approaches and controls are appropriate. Learners don't just study risk assessment and safe systems of work – these form part of the qualification assessment. Learners are required to undertake a risk assessment and construct a safe system of work, putting what they have learnt into practice. For organisation-specific courses, wherever appropriate we relate discussions and examples to your workplace. The aim is to help learners develop knowledge they can actually apply to the health and safety responsibilities they hold at work, rather than simply preparing them to pass an examination.

Maximum learners

Maximum learner-to-tutor ratio: 12:1.

We limit this course to 12 learners per tutor. At this level, learners need opportunities to ask questions, explore different workplace situations, discuss how health and safety principles apply in practice and receive appropriate support with the assessment activities.

Prerequisites

Learners must be 16 years of age or over.

Highfield recommends that learners already hold a Level 3 health and safety qualification and advises that learners have a minimum of Level 2 literacy or equivalent.

This is an advanced course and learners should be prepared to apply health and safety principles to workplace situations, develop a risk assessment and safe system of work, and complete a written examination.

Live training via Microsoft Teams: learners will need access to a computer or laptop with a reliable internet connection and must be able to attend the course from a suitable location where they can participate by themselves without assistance from other people. Learners will also need access to a smartphone for the assessment.

Learners will need to provide suitable identification before completing the assessment in accordance with Highfield's requirements.

Course duration

The qualification has 40 Guided Learning Hours (GLH) and a Total Qualification Time (TQT) of 55 hours.

Good Skills Training delivers this qualification face-to-face or through live remote training via Microsoft Teams.

For face-to-face courses the training is delivered over 5-days. For live remote delivery via Microsoft Teams, we normally break the course into 10 half-day sessions. We find this works better than expecting learners to spend five full days concentrating on an intensive Level 4 programme through a screen.

Throughout the course we combine tutor-led learning with discussion, exercises, workplace examples and assessment preparation. Learners are encouraged to apply what they're learning rather than simply memorising information for the examination.

Assessment

The qualification has two assessment parts and learners must pass both to achieve the qualification.

Part 1 – Workplace activities: learners undertake a risk assessment and construct a safe system of work. These activities are completed during the course and do not need to be completed under examination conditions. They are internally assessed and subject to external moderation by Highfield.

Part 2 – Written examination: learners complete a 3-hour written examination based around a case study. Learners are required to apply their health and safety knowledge to the circumstances described rather than simply recall information.

The examination pass mark is 60%. A score of 70% achieves a Merit and 80% achieves a Distinction.

Learners must successfully complete both assessment parts to achieve the qualification.

Certification

Learners who successfully complete both parts of the assessment receive the Highfield Level 4 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace (RQF).

This is a regulated Level 4 qualification awarded by Highfield Qualifications.

Requalification

There is no fixed universal requalification period stated for every Highfield qualification. Employers should refresh training in line with risk, role, legal requirements and organisational policy. Where a specific refresher qualification exists, we can advise on the most appropriate route.

Can you deliver the course specifically for our organisation?

Yes. We can deliver the course specifically for your organisation, either at your premises or live remotely via Microsoft Teams.

Face-to-face courses are normally delivered over 5 full days. For Teams delivery, we normally spread the course over 10 half-day sessions. We find this works better remotely for an intensive Level 4 course and gives learners time between sessions to take in and apply what we have covered.

Wherever possible, we use examples that are relevant to your workplace, the activities you carry out and the types of risks your managers and supervisors actually deal with.

It is still the same regulated Highfield qualification, so all of the required course content and assessment requirements still need to be met.

Do I need to hold a Level 3 health and safety qualification before attending?

No. Holding a Level 3 health and safety qualification is not stated as a mandatory entry requirement, although Highfield recommends that learners already hold a Level 3 health and safety qualification.

This is an advanced Level 4 course, so you should already have a good understanding of workplace health and safety. If you're unsure whether you have the right level of knowledge or experience, talk to us before booking and we'll help you decide.

Does the Level 4 Health and Safety qualification expire?

The Highfield qualification specification does not state a fixed expiry or requalification period for this qualification.

That doesn't mean your health and safety knowledge should stand still. Legislation, guidance, workplace risks and working practices can change, so managers and supervisors should keep their knowledge up to date through appropriate continuing professional development (CPD) and refresher training.

Further training should also be considered if your responsibilities change, new risks or working practices are introduced, or an incident, audit or review identifies an area where your knowledge needs updating.

What can I do after completing the Level 4 Health and Safety qualification?

That depends on your role and what you want to do next.

For some learners, the qualification provides the additional health and safety knowledge they need for their existing management or supervisory responsibilities. Others may use it as a step towards further study or a more specialist health and safety role.

Highfield identifies progression to further Level 4 or Level 5 occupational health and safety qualifications as a possible next step.

What is the difference between this course and IOSH Managing Safely?

They are different courses for different needs.

The Highfield Level 4 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace (RQF) is an advanced regulated qualification for people with significant responsibility for managing health and safety. It goes into considerably more depth and includes formal assessment, including a risk assessment, safe system of work and written examination.

IOSH Managing Safely is aimed at managers and supervisors who need a practical understanding of how to manage health and safety as part of their role but don't necessarily need an advanced regulated qualification.
