About the training
Course Overview
Our Paediatric First Aid Course gives people who care for babies and children the practical skills, knowledge and confidence to respond when a child becomes ill or injured.
The course starts with the immediate actions that can save a life, including casualty assessment, infant and child CPR, AED use, recovery position, choking, seizures, bleeding and shock. It then goes further into the wider injuries and medical emergencies that can occur when caring for children, including fractures, head injuries, burns, poisoning, anaphylaxis, asthma, meningitis and febrile convulsions.
This is the full 12-hour Paediatric First Aid course required under the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) for relevant early years and childcare settings.
Early years providers must make sure they have the appropriate number of staff with current Paediatric First Aid training in place to meet the EYFS requirements. This includes ensuring suitable Paediatric First Aid cover is available while children are on the premises and during outings.
Learners don't just hear what they should do. They practise using infant and child manikins, work through realistic situations and receive feedback from the trainer so they understand what to do, why they are doing it and how their response may change depending on the age and condition of the child.
The course can be completed fully face-to-face over 2 days or through blended learning, with part of the learning completed online before attending a full practical face-to-face training day.
Looking after a baby or child in an emergency can feel daunting. Good training should make the response clearer and build genuine confidence. Practical, interactive and relevant training – and quality training at affordable prices – shouldn't be an alien concept.

- Assessing an emergency involving a baby or child.

- Managing an unresponsive breathing baby or child.
- Infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
- Child cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
- Safe use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).
- Infant and child choking.
- Seizures and febrile convulsions.
- External and life-threatening bleeding.
- Recognising and responding to shock.
- Allergic reactions and anaphylaxis.

Maximum learners
Maximum ratio of 12 learners per tutor, in line with all first aid courses.
Prerequisites
There are no previous first aid qualifications required to attend this course.
The course is primarily aimed at learners aged 16 years and over who have responsibility for babies or children.
This is a practical first aid course and requires floor work. Learners must be physically capable of demonstrating first aid procedures, including performing CPR on infant and child manikins positioned on the floor and taking part in practical casualty-management activities.
Learners should have sufficient English to understand the training, take part in practical activities and complete the required assessment.
Learners completing the blended course will also need access to a suitable internet-connected device so the eLearning can be completed before attending the practical day.
If a learner has a disability, medical condition or additional support requirement that may affect their participation, please tell us before the course so suitable support or reasonable adjustments can be considered.
Course duration
The Paediatric First Aid Course provides a minimum of 12 hours of training, excluding breaks.
Good Skills Training offers the course through two delivery routes:
- Face-to-face: 12 hours of classroom-based training, normally delivered over 2 days, typically 09:30 – 16:30 each day.
- Blended learning: approximately 6 hours of eLearning completed before attending 1 full face-to-face practical training and assessment day, typically 09:30 – 16:30.
Assessment
The course is assessed through a combination of practical assessment and a written multiple-choice examination.
- Written examination: 40 multiple-choice questions.
- Time allowed: 1 hour.
- Pass mark: 30 correct answers out of 40 (75%).
- Practical assessment: learners must successfully demonstrate the required paediatric first aid skills.
Certification
Learners who successfully complete the course and assessment receive a Paediatric First Aid certificate.

Requalification
The Paediatric First Aid certificate is valid for 3 years.
Learners who need to maintain their Paediatric First Aid training should complete the appropriate full Paediatric First Aid course again before their current certificate expires.
Annual refresher training is strongly recommended during the three-year certification period to help keep practical first aid skills fresh, current and easier to recall in an emergency.
Employers should also arrange additional refresher training when first aid procedures, equipment, relevant guidance or childcare arrangements change, or where practice shows that further training would be useful.
