About the training
Course Overview
The Highfield Level 2 Award in Safe Moving and Handling (RQF) is a regulated qualification for people who undertake manual handling activities at work and need to understand how those activities can be carried out more safely.
The course looks at much more than simply lifting technique. Learners explore why manual handling injuries occur, employer and employee responsibilities, how manual handling risks should be assessed and controlled, and the equipment that can be used to help reduce risk.
Learners then put the principles into practice. The qualification includes practical moving and handling activities covering individual handling, the use of handling aids and equipment, and working as part of a team.
Wherever possible, we make training relevant to the workplace. For in-house courses, we encourage organisations to tell us about the loads, equipment and handling activities their employees carry out and provide relevant risk assessments or other information where appropriate.
This is a regulated Level 2 qualification awarded by Highfield Qualifications and includes both a multiple-choice examination and practical assessment.

Maximum learner-to-tutor/assessor ratio: 12:1.
Prerequisites
There are no formal prerequisite qualifications for attending the Highfield Level 2 Award in Safe Moving and Handling (RQF).
The qualification is approved for learners aged 14 and above. Highfield advises that learners have a minimum of Level 1 literacy and/or numeracy, or equivalent.
This is a practical qualification. Learners must be able to take part in the required moving and handling activities and demonstrate the practical skills required by the qualification.
Learners should tell us before the course about any disability, injury, medical condition or additional support requirement that could affect their participation so that appropriate support and reasonable adjustments can be considered.
As this is a regulated qualification, appropriate learner identification will also be required for assessment.
Course duration
The Highfield Level 2 Award in Safe Moving and Handling (RQF) has 10 Guided Learning Hours.
Good Skills Training delivers the qualification face-to-face over 2 days, 09:30 – 15:30.
The course combines tutor-led learning with practical moving and handling activities and the required knowledge and practical assessments.
Learners must successfully complete both the knowledge and practical assessment elements to achieve the qualification.
Assessment
The qualification is assessed through a combination of a multiple-choice examination and practical assessment.
Learners complete a 15-question multiple-choice examination under the required examination conditions. The examination lasts a maximum of 30 minutes and learners must correctly answer at least 9 out of 15 questions to pass.
Learners must also successfully complete a competency-based practical assessment covering the required moving and handling activities.
The practical assessment includes individual lifting and moving, carrying a load with a change of direction, using equipment to push a load and working as part of a team to lift, carry and lower a load.
Learners must achieve a pass in every required element of the practical assessment as well as passing the multiple-choice examination to achieve the qualification.
Certification
Learners who successfully complete all required assessments receive the Highfield Level 2 Award in Safe Moving and Handling (RQF).
This is a regulated Level 2 qualification awarded by Highfield Qualifications.
The qualification number is 501/1772/5.
Requalification
There is no fixed universal requalification period stated for every Highfield qualification. Employers should refresh training in line with risk, role, legal requirements and organisational policy. Where a specific refresher qualification exists, we can advise on the most appropriate route.
