About the training
Course Overview
A good risk assessment isn't about producing pages of paperwork or trying to remove every possible risk from the workplace. It's about understanding what could cause harm, deciding whether you're doing enough to control the risk and taking sensible action where more needs to be done.
Our Risk Assessment Course is a practical one-day course for people who carry out, contribute to or review workplace risk assessments. The course follows the principles of risk assessment and risk management set out in guidance from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
We look at the difference between a hazard and a risk, who could be harmed and how, how to evaluate risk, existing controls, whether further controls are needed and how actions should be recorded, implemented and reviewed.
We don't just teach learners a risk assessment process and then expect them to remember it. Throughout the day, learners work through examples and activities, identify hazards and practise completing risk assessments. We use different styles of risk assessment so learners understand the principles rather than becoming dependent on one particular form or risk matrix.
We also look at the hierarchy of control and the importance of choosing sensible and proportionate controls. The aim isn't simply to produce a lower number on a risk matrix; it's to understand the risk and decide what reasonably needs to be done to protect people.
For organisation-specific courses, we can use examples from your own workplace and activities so that learners can relate what they're learning to the risks they may actually need to assess.
Following the course, each learner completes their own workplace risk assessment. This gives them the opportunity to put what they've learned into practice and demonstrate that they can work through the risk assessment process for themselves.

The practical details you may need before arranging or booking this course.
Maximum learners
Maximum learner-to-tutor ratio: 12:1.
We limit this course to a maximum of 12 learners per tutor because risk assessment is best learned by doing it. The smaller group size gives learners time to ask questions, work through examples, take part in activities and practise applying the risk assessment process.
Prerequisites
There are no formal qualification prerequisites for this course.
Learners should have sufficient knowledge of their workplace, work activities or area of responsibility to be able to apply the risk assessment process to a realistic workplace situation.
As part of the course assessment, learners are required to complete their own workplace risk assessment following the course, so they will need access to a suitable work activity or work area that they can assess.
Live training via Microsoft Teams: learners will need access to a computer or laptop with a reliable internet connection and a suitable environment where they can participate fully in the course and activities.

Course duration
The course is delivered over 1 day.
The day combines tutor-led learning with discussion, activities, examples and practical risk assessment exercises. A significant part of the course is spent applying the risk assessment process rather than simply learning the theory behind it.
The course can be delivered face-to-face or through live remote training via Microsoft Teams.
For organisation-specific courses, we can use appropriate examples from your workplace and activities to make the training relevant to the people attending.
Assessment
Learners are assessed by completing a practical workplace risk assessment following the course.
The assessment must be the learner's own work and should be based on a suitable area or activity within their workplace. Learners identify five hazards and work each one through the risk assessment process, including who may be harmed and how, existing controls, the level of risk, any additional controls required, residual risk, responsibility for actions and appropriate timescales.
Learners have 2 weeks after the course to complete and return their assessment.
The risk assessment is marked against Good Skills Training's assessment criteria. There are 47 marks available and learners must achieve at least 33 marks to pass.
Certification
Learners who successfully complete the course and assessment receive a Good Skills Training Risk Assessment Course certificate.
Good Skills Training is ISO 9001 certified for the delivery of training and consultancy services, including course certification.
Requalification
There is no fixed expiry for this GST course unless stated in the booking confirmation. Employers should schedule refresher training when procedures, risks or guidance change, or where practice shows it is needed.
