About the training
Course Overview
Our First Aid & AED Instructor Requalification Course is an intensive blended programme for existing first aid instructors who need to renew their first aid qualifications and refresh their practical and instructional competence.
The programme combines eLearning completed before the course with 2 face-to-face training days. The eLearning covers the required theory, allowing us to make much better use of the classroom time for practical first aid, assessment, discussion and teaching practice.
The face-to-face days are built around micro-teach sessions delivered by the instructors attending the course. Rather than spending two days listening to somebody else teach first aid, learners take an active role in delivering different areas of the first aid syllabus.
These sessions give us an opportunity to refresh first aid knowledge and practical skills while also looking at how we teach them. We can share different approaches, discuss what works well with learners, explore common problems and misconceptions and consider any changes to first aid practice or guidance.
Throughout the programme our trainer observes delivery, practical demonstrations and assessment practice, providing feedback and identifying opportunities to develop or refresh instructional skills.
Successful completion renews the first aid qualifications required as part of the Good Skills Training first aid instructor pathway while helping experienced instructors keep their training practical, interactive and relevant.

Maximum learners
Maximum learner-to-tutor ratio: 12:1.
This is an active instructor requalification programme. Learners don't simply observe demonstrations – everyone is expected to contribute to micro-teach sessions, practical first aid activities, assessment, discussion and feedback.
Group numbers are controlled so that learners have appropriate opportunities to demonstrate both their first aid competence and their ability to deliver effective first aid training.
Prerequisites
This is a requalification course for existing first aid instructors. It is not an initial First Aid Instructor Course.
Learners must already be appropriately qualified and competent to deliver and assess first aid training.
Learners must also hold current, in-date First Aid at Work and Paediatric First Aid qualifications when attending the course. These qualifications must not have expired before the requalification programme takes place.
Learners are expected to have good current first aid knowledge and practical skills. The purpose of this programme is to renew existing first aid qualifications and refresh instructional competence, rather than reteach first aid from the beginning.
Because this is a blended programme, learners will need access to a suitable computer and reliable internet connection to complete the required eLearning.
All required eLearning must be completed before attending the first face-to-face training day.
Learners will be expected to take an active role throughout the face-to-face programme, including planning and delivering micro-teach sessions, demonstrating practical first aid skills, assessing other learners and participating in group feedback and discussion.
The course includes practical first aid demonstrations and assessments at floor level, including CPR. Learners should tell us before the course about any disability, medical condition or additional support requirement so that appropriate support and reasonable adjustments can be considered.
Course duration
The First Aid & AED Instructor Requalification Course is delivered through blended learning, combining eLearning with 2 face-to-face training days.
All required eLearning must be completed before attending the face-to-face course. The online learning covers the required theory for the first aid qualifications, allowing the classroom programme to concentrate on practical skills, assessment, discussion and instructional practice.
The 2 face-to-face days are intensive and are built around practical first aid and micro-teach sessions delivered by the instructors attending the course.
Learners should arrive prepared to take an active role in teaching, demonstrating first aid skills, assessing practical performance, providing feedback and sharing their own experience and approaches with the group.
Assessment
Assessment takes place throughout the blended programme and includes the assessment requirements of the First Aid at Work and Paediatric First Aid qualifications together with observation of the learner's instructional practice.
Learners complete the required knowledge assessment and practical first aid assessments for the regulated qualifications.
The face-to-face programme is also built around micro-teach sessions delivered by the instructors themselves. Learners are expected to plan and deliver first aid topics, demonstrate practical skills, involve other members of the group and demonstrate appropriate assessment and feedback techniques.
Our trainer observes these sessions and provides constructive feedback on both first aid competence and training delivery.
This approach allows requalification to be more than simply repeating a first aid course. It provides an opportunity to demonstrate competence, share good practice and continue developing as a first aid instructor.
All required assessment elements must be successfully completed before the relevant certificates can be issued.
Certification
Successful completion of the programme renews the first aid qualifications included within the Good Skills Training First Aid Instructor pathway.
Subject to successful completion of the relevant assessments, learners will achieve:
- QNUK Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF) – completed through the requalification route.
- QNUK Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF).
- Good Skills Training First Aid Instructor Requalification certification, recognising successful completion of the wider instructor requalification programme.
Requalification
The first aid qualifications renewed through this programme are valid for 3 years.
First aid instructors should complete the First Aid & AED Instructor Requalification Course every 3 years to renew their First Aid at Work and Paediatric First Aid qualifications and refresh their practical and instructional competence.
Instructors should also maintain their first aid knowledge, practical skills and teaching competence between formal requalification courses through regular training delivery, practical practice and appropriate continuing professional development.
