About the training
Course Overview
Our First Response Course for Scout and Guide Leaders provides the first aid learning required by Scouts and Girlguiding for volunteers whose roles require First Response.
The course is built around the types of incidents volunteers may face while supporting children and young people during weekly meetings, activities, camps, trips and events.
Learners cover essential life support, injuries, major illness and environmental emergencies, with practical demonstrations and scenarios used throughout the training. The emphasis is not simply on remembering a list of treatments, but on recognising what has happened, deciding what needs to be done and managing both the casualty and the wider situation.
First Response is movement-specific first aid learning rather than an externally regulated first aid qualification. It is designed specifically around the requirements of Scouts and Girlguiding.
For some adventurous, remote or higher-risk activities, First Response may not provide the level of first aid training required. Leaders should always consider the relevant activity rules and risk assessment when deciding whether additional first aid training is needed.
We keep the course practical, interactive and relevant to volunteering. Scenarios are based around situations leaders might genuinely encounter rather than generic workplace examples.

- Relevant 14–24 Team Leaders.
- Girlguiding volunteers who require 1st Response training.
- Adults who regularly support children and young people within Scouts or Girlguiding and require the movement-specific first aid learning.
- Existing volunteers who need to renew their First Response before their current three-year validity ends.
Course content

- Safe approach, primary survey and initial casualty assessment.
- Adult and child cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
- Safe use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).
- Choking.
- Managing an unresponsive casualty and maintaining a safe airway.
- Shock and bleeding.
- Fractures and sprains.
- Spinal injuries.
- Head injuries and dental incidents.
- Burns.
- Asthma and anaphylaxis.
- Chest pain and stroke.
- Seizures.
- Hypoglycaemia.
- Sepsis and meningitis.
- Drowning.
- Prevention of hypothermia and management of heat stroke.
- Snake bites and tick removal.
- Practical first aid scenarios relevant to Scout and Guide activities.

Course Information
The practical details you may need before arranging or booking this course.
Maximum learners
Maximum ratio of 12 learners per tutor, in line with all first aid courses.
Prerequisites
No previous first aid qualification is required to attend the First Response Course.
Learners must complete the required First Response learning outcomes for their role.
This is practical first aid training and includes floor work. Learners will be required to take part in practical first aid activities, including demonstrating adult and child CPR on manikins positioned on the floor.
Where a learner cannot perform an element in the usual way because of a disability, medical condition or other additional need, this should be discussed with the trainer or organiser before the course wherever possible so that appropriate reasonable adjustments can be considered.
Course duration
The First Response Course requires 6 hours of learning.
For our standard face-to-face course, Good Skills Training normally delivers the training over 1 day.
First Response can also be delivered through other approved models. For example, the face-to-face learning can be delivered as one six-hour session or as three separate two-hour sessions.
First Response includes theoretical learning, often referred to as 10A, together with a coached practical component, often referred to as 10B. Approved delivery models include a face-to-face coached practical element.
If your Scout or Guide group requires a different delivery model, talk to us about your requirements and we can confirm the appropriate option.
Assessment
First Response includes assessment to confirm that learners have met the required learning outcomes.
Assessment is carried out by the First Response Trainer through a combination of practical demonstration and oral questioning.
Learners are required to demonstrate key practical skills, including:
- Approaching an incident safely and carrying out a primary survey.
- Adult CPR.
- Child CPR.
- Other practical First Response skills where demonstration is required by the trainer.
Certification
Learners who successfully meet the required First Response learning outcomes receive the appropriate First Response recognition for Scouts or Girlguiding.
First Response is movement-specific learning designed for volunteers within Scouts and Girlguiding. It is not an externally regulated first aid qualification.
The First Response requirement is valid for 3 years for volunteers whose role requires it.
Some activities may require a higher level of first aid qualification. Leaders should check the relevant activity rules and risk assessment when deciding whether First Response provides sufficient first aid cover.
Requalification
First Response is valid for 3 years where it is required for the volunteer's role.
Volunteers who continue in a role requiring First Response must renew their learning before their current First Response validity expires.
Additional first aid training may also be appropriate where a volunteer takes on activities or responsibilities requiring a higher level of first aid competence.
