Course Overview

The Highfield Level 2 Award in the Principles of Fire Safety (RQF) is a regulated qualification for people who have responsibility for fire safety in the workplace. The course develops a practical understanding of how fires start and spread, common workplace fire hazards, fire prevention, escape arrangements, fire-fighting equipment and the principles of fire risk assessment. It is particularly useful for fire marshals, fire wardens, supervisors, managers and others who need more than basic fire awareness and want a recognised qualification to support their role. At Good Skills Training, we keep the subject practical and relevant. We use workplace examples, questions and discussion to help learners understand how the qualification applies to real premises rather than simply teaching information for the examination. Fire safety is a serious subject, but that does not mean the training has to be dull. We believe good safety training should be practical, interactive and relevant – and quality training at affordable prices should not be an alien concept.

Good housekeeping and control of combustible materials.
Means of escape, including routes, signage, refuges and assembly points.
Fire detection and methods of raising the alarm.
Portable and fixed fire-fighting equipment and their uses.
Responsibilities of employers and employees for workplace fire safety.
The day-to-day role of a fire warden.
The role of a fire warden during an emergency.
What a fire warden should do if they are away from their designated area when the alarm is raised.

Prerequisites

There are no previous fire-safety qualifications required to enrol on this course. Learners must be at least 14 years old. Highfield also recommends that learners have a minimum of Level 1 English or equivalent so they can understand the course content and complete the assessment. Learners will need to provide suitable identification before completing the qualification assessment. If you have a disability, medical condition or additional support requirement that may affect your learning or assessment, please tell us before the course so reasonable adjustments can be considered in line with Highfield requirements.

Course duration

Official qualification duration: 6 Guided Learning Hours (GLH). Good Skills Training normally delivers the qualification as a one-day face-to-face course. The timetable allows time for tutor-led learning, discussion, workplace examples and preparation for the assessment. The qualification can also be completed through our Qualify at Home route, allowing learners to complete the learning remotely before undertaking the required Highfield assessment under the approved arrangements.

Assessment

The qualification is assessed through an externally set multiple-choice examination.

Number of questions: 20.
Assessment time: 45 minutes.
Pass mark: 12 correct answers out of 20.
Grading: Pass or Fail.

The assessment is completed under the required Highfield examination and invigilation arrangements. During the course, the tutor will explain the subject clearly, check understanding and use practical workplace examples so learners are preparing to understand fire safety rather than simply memorise answers for the exam.

Certification

Learners who successfully complete the assessment receive the Highfield Level 2 Award in the Principles of Fire Safety (RQF). Qualification number: 603/1614/7 This is a regulated qualification awarded by Highfield Qualifications and sits on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). Certification is subject to successfully meeting the assessment requirements and the relevant Highfield quality assurance processes.

Requalification

Best practice is for refresher training to take place at least every 3-years in line with other health and safety related training. Employers should schedule refresher training when procedures, risks or guidance change, or where practice shows it is needed.
